The Bose ProFlight Aviation Headset is the industry's smallest, quietest and most comfortable active noise cancelling communication headset. With an on-head weight of 4.9 ounces, the new Bose ProFlight Aviation Headset is designed for long term comfort and is our most innovative headset yet. Engineered for pilots of moderately noisy pressurized turbine powered aircraft, it incorporates more than 30 U.S. utility and design patents. The ProFlight Aviation Headset features three levels of user selectable active noise cancellation, active equalization to improve intelligibility of incoming transmissions, a noise cancelling microphone for clearer outgoing transmissions, talk-through tap control for communication with those outside the intercom and full function Bluetooth® connectivity with smartphones, tablets or EFBs. The ProFlight Headset is FAA TSO and EASA E/TSO-C139a certified, meets all applicable ARINC standards and is available with four different plug configurations. The introduction of the ProFlight Headset with active noise cancellation represents the first time Bose will have multiple aviation headsets on the market. The ProFlight Headset is ideal where noise is pervasive, comfort is required and communication is critical.



Acoustic Noise Cancelling® (ANC) Mode Switch

Sets ANC levels and changes the spectrum of noise that the user hears for three different optimized experiences. Use the low setting for improved interpersonal communication outside of the intercom. Use medium setting for typical jet aircraft, providing sufficient cancellation for clear and comfortable radio communication – the ProFlight meets the latest ARINC recommendation for noise reduction in jet aircraft. Use the high setting for the best signal-to-noise ratio. This setting is ideal for louder aircraft where more noise cancellation performance provides an even better experience.

Bose ANC technology lessens background distractions. It reduces low-frequency noise and allows users to hear communications audio at lower, more comfortable levels. Three unique settings adjust the audio spectrum and noise levels to match the user’s preference.


Active equalization

Electronic circuitry shapes and equalizes incoming audio signals when headset is turned on.

Clean, optimized sound quality that enhances intelligibility of intercom audio and clarity while still sounding natural.


Easily replaceable left and right eartips

Three sizes of eartips, specifically designed for left or right ears, easily snap on and off to provide optimal comfort, performance and convenience.

Provides a more stable and comfortable fit. Also provides an easy, hygienic way to share headsets.


Electret microphone

Provides clear communication and reduces background noise. Designed for pressurized jet aircraft with either “hot mic” or PTT systems.

Reduces background noise to improve communications and intelligibility.


LED power and battery life indicators

Indicates when the ANC is turned on and the remaining hours of battery life (green: healthy batteries; amber slow flash: approximately 8 hours remain; red quick flash: less than 2 hours remain).

Provides users with a real-time battery life indication, taking the guesswork out of when to replace batteries. On a fresh set of alkaline batteries, users can expect no less than 25 hours of continuous use with Bluetooth on, and at least 45 hours with Bluetooth turned off.


Control module

Design houses two AA alkaline batteries, battery-status LED indicators, power switch and power management circuitry.

The module fits comfortably in user’s hand and can be easily stored in a pocket or hung via the included lanyard or cable clips.

Tap control for talk-through communication

Double tapping either earbud optimizes audio to communicate with those outside of the intercom.

Allows users to optimize hearing in the voice range, allowing enhanced hearing in the ear and improved communications with those not using an intercom. This feature can be turned on or off with a switch on the control module.


Flexible power circuitry with auto-on

Headset seamlessly switches from battery to aircraft power without compromising headset performance. With auto-on enabled, the headset switches to and from headset battery and aircraft power.

Added flexibility for users who wish to enjoy the benefits of the headset without worrying about their source of power. Allows user to change configuration from aircraft power to battery power with the use of an adapter and 2 AA batteries. In aircraft equipped with a powered avionics panel, the ProFlight headset will power on automatically when connected. This function is user configurable (available only with 6 pin, 5 pin and 7 pin configurations).

Users can choose how to mix auxiliary audio with Bluetooth audio, as well as having the ability to disconnect power from all Bluetooth circuitry when needed.

1 - Selecting the proper ear tip size is critical:

If you have the wrong size, the headset’s performance will be compromised. This is especially true of the tap control feature, which simply will not work properly. ProFlight comes with three tip sizes: S, M, L. The medium is the default size and fits most pilots best. The small and large can be found in the pouch inside the carry case. Some pilots may find that they need one size in one ear and another size for the other ear. To change the ear tip, they should not pull on the “wing” of the silicone ear tip. Instead, they should hold the wing with their index finger and thumb while supporting the base of the ear tip with their other fingers. Gently pull back and away from the ear bud to remove the tip. This will reduce the likelihood that they will tear the ear tip.


2 - Three Levels of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) :

We have learned that we should have referred to these as 3 modes of ANC or 3 ANC profiles, NOT levels. Pilots, understandably, think high, medium and low refer to the amount of ANC they will get. In fact, the three settings offer different noise cancelling profiles based on environmental factors. This means that in some aircraft pilots might find medium to be a better setting than high. We also need to stress that the low position is really just “hear-through” which optimizes voice frequencies outside the intercom. Unfortunately, wind noise is in a similar frequency range as voice, so the user will experience an increase in overall noise, even though voices will be optimized. It is important to stress that low mode is intended for use on the ground, while at the gate for example, to communicate with people coming in and out of the flight deck while staying in contact with flight ops. It is NOT intended for use while in flight (pilots who have tried it while flying have complained that it is an unusable setting because it is much too loud, which isn’t surprising because we never intended for it to be used that way). The same holds true for tap control. The intent is to use it when you need, then to go back to medium or high mode. When new in the box tap control for talk- through communication is turned off. The feature can be turned on with a switch inside the control module.


3 - Cable stiffness and thickness :

We know the cable is thicker than most other headsets. This is due to a number of design and performance goals we set out for ourselves and places performance over cosmetic factors:

A - The headset / cable are TSO - E/TSO compliant which means it needs to pass a variety of tests.

B - While we strive to make a cable that is as thin and flexible as possible, we place priority on the need to deliver clear communication in fields with high EMI.

C - We also want to ensure the headset continues to perform even under a high electro static discharge or lightning strike.

D - Our desire to provide a cable that is robust and passes cable flex and pull force tests is also important to us. ProFlight’s cable is expected to outperform those of other products currently on the market.

E - ProFlight has several new features and new technology that require additional conductors in our cables.

F - Flame retardant and mold resistant materials add to the overall performance, durability and reliability of the cable. Meeting these types of performance goals drives the cable jacket design, the conector design and the cable strain relief design. In addition it drives the need for many layers of shielding to prevent cross talk or signal interference. And these designs were not just settled on. Bose conducted many hours of testing and several design iterations to guarantee the headset meets these important performance criteria.


4 - Side pads and headband placement:

The side pads are in the vertical position for stowage. Prior to use, they should be rotated to the horizontal position with the small ear bud hook positioned at the back. There is a distinct L & R marking. The headband should be placed slightly in front of the head’s center for the best Comfort and stability. Of course, the headband can be adjusted for a tighter or looser fit, but a loose fit will impact stability.


5 - The headset is very light, but is it durable:

It looks quite delicate. While ProFlight looks delicate, it has been designed to be quite robust. Some of the testing includes:

. Drop test

. Ship tests

. Thermal / Environmental tests

. Material degradation tests

. Rotating the side pads tens of thousands of times

. Flexing the headband tens of thousands of times

. Flexing the earbud cable and the down cable tens of thousands of cycles

. Extensive pull tests on the down cable and the earbud cable

In pursuit of minimizing weight we have used high quality fiber filled composites (Glass filled nylon) which offer high strength to weight ratio solutions. This does not mean the headset is indestructible, but it does mean it is robust and will stand up to the rigors of daily use in its intended environment.

6 - When battery replacement is needed, use only AA (LR06) alkaline batteries. Do not replace with rechargeable batteries.

7 - The headset is intended for quieter turbine powered aircraft (like those made by Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, Gulfstream, Bombardier, etc.). It is not intended for use in general aviation aircraft like Cessna 172’s or Caravans. Nor is it intended for use in ATR’s, Dash-8’s, Q- 400’s, etc.
